The particulate filter traps the soot produced by diesel engines and burns it off through automatic regenerations (when the engine reaches temperature) or forced regenerations at the garage: when it becomes permanently blocked or melts, the car goes into limp mode, fails the ITV (Spanish MOT) and the only solution is to replace it.
