When should you replace the parcel shelf?

The parcel shelf is mainly replaced because of cosmetic damage: upholstery faded by the sun (it gets a lot of direct sunlight through the rear window), tears, stains or breakage from knocks with luggage. It is also commonly replaced when it has been lost (second-hand cars bought without one) or when the load cover's retracting mechanism stops working properly.

In vehicles with speakers built into the parcel shelf, one of the speakers may also fail, in which case it is usually worth replacing the whole shelf rather than removing and repairing the speaker on its own. It is a bulky but light part and can be swapped in a few minutes without a garage.
