Frequently asked questions about power steering pumps

How do I tell a hydraulic pump from an electro-hydraulic one?

The hydraulic pump is belt-driven by the engine and needs a reservoir and hoses. The electro-hydraulic pump is a compact unit with an electric motor and a power connector; it does not rely on the belt.

Does the pump come with its pulley and bracket?

Hydraulic pumps are supplied with their original pulley and bracket when it is removable. Electro-hydraulic pumps come as the complete module with connector.

Which fluid should I use when replacing it?

You must follow the manufacturer’s specification: ATF Dexron, CHF 11S or the green/yellow equivalent depending on the model. Mixing incompatible fluids damages the seals and the pump itself.

Do I need to bleed the system after fitting it?

Yes. After fitting the pump, bleed the air by turning the steering wheel from lock to lock several times with the engine idling, until the noise and the bubbles in the reservoir disappear.
