The oil sump is the part that holds the engine's lubricant: knocks on speed bumps, contact with kerbs or a stolen drain plug are the most common reasons for replacing it.

FAQs about sumps

Is replacing the oil sump difficult?

The job itself is simple (drain the oil, undo the sump bolts, clean the mating surface, fit the new sump with a gasket or sealant and refill). The difficulty depends on the model: on some you have to remove crossmembers or the subframe to reach the sump.

Does the sump gasket always need replacing?

Yes, always. The gasket or sealant is single-use. On engines that use anaerobic sealant, you must apply the bead specified by the manufacturer and follow the bolt tightening torque to avoid leaks.

Can a cracked sump be repaired instead of replaced?

In some cases it can be welded (aluminium with TIG or pressed steel sumps with MIG), but the repair is rarely 100% reliable and often leaks in the medium term. The recommended option is to replace the sump with a tested one.

Should the oil pump be replaced with the sump?

It is not compulsory, but if the sump has taken a hard knock or the engine has shown low oil pressure warnings, the pump and strainer should be checked. A worn pump causes low pressure and serious damage to the bearings and camshaft.
