What does a complete cylinder head include?

A complete cylinder head includes the aluminium casting, camshaft(s), valves (inlet and exhaust), springs, hydraulic tappets or lifters and valve stem seals, and usually comes with clean coolant passages. It does not include the head gasket, manifolds or rocker cover.

What needs doing before fitting a cylinder head from a car breaker's?

Check flatness with a straight edge and feeler gauge, check the valve seats with a light test or dye penetrant, and clean all mating surfaces. Always replace the head gasket and the head bolts (if they are single-use), and inspect the camshaft and tappets.

Can you tell if a cylinder head is warped without removing it?

Warning signs: engine temperature rising abnormally, oil in the coolant (mayonnaise-like sludge on the oil filler cap or in the expansion tank), emulsion on the dipstick and persistent white smoke from the exhaust. A combustion gas test on the cooling circuit confirms a head gasket or cylinder head leak.

How long does a cylinder head take to arrive?

Cylinder heads are shipped in 48-72h by specialist carrier because of their weight and size. They are given reinforced packaging on a pallet or in a dedicated box to prevent damage in transit, with a tracking number.
