When should you replace the steering wheel?

A steering wheel may be replaced for cosmetic reasons (worn or shiny leather, fading from use), functional reasons (steering wheel controls that stop responding, vibration due to imbalance) or as an upgrade (fitting a wheel with multifunction controls or paddle shifters to a vehicle that didn't originally have them).

On vehicles with an airbag, replacement requires disconnecting the battery, waiting for the capacitor to discharge and removing the airbag before undoing the steering wheel's centre nut. If the car has cruise control, radio controls or paddles, the clock spring wiring must be connected. The job should be done by a specialist garage.
