FAQs about exhaust manifolds

How do I know if the exhaust manifold is cracked?

Typical symptoms are a loud exhaust noise, especially on cold start (which fades as the engine warms up and the metal expands), exhaust fumes in the cabin, loss of power on turbo engines and black soot marks around the manifold.

Why do cast iron manifolds crack?

Cast iron withstands heat but is brittle under thermal shock and vibration. Repeated heating cycles (reaching over 700 °C under hard use) and cooling, together with engine vibration, eventually cause micro-cracks that spread until they become through-cracks.

Can a cast iron exhaust manifold be welded?

Yes, with cast iron welding rods and proper preheating, but the result is rarely long-lasting. The recommended option is to replace the manifold with a tested used one, which works out cheaper and comes with a warranty.

What should be replaced along with the manifold?

The manifold gaskets (single-use) must be replaced and the studs checked: if they are corroded or the threads are stripped, they should be replaced before fitting the new manifold. On turbo engines, also check the gasket between the manifold and the turbo.
