Frequently asked questions about cooling system parts

How do I know if the water pump has failed?

Typical symptoms are coolant leaking around the pump, noise at idle (worn bearing), unstable engine temperature or overheating. If the pump is driven by the timing belt, it is always best to replace it together with the complete kit.

How often should the thermostat be replaced?

The thermostat has no fixed replacement interval; it is replaced when it fails. If the engine is slow to warm up, never reaches its optimum temperature or overheats for no obvious reason, the thermostat should be checked. On engines with an electronic thermostat it is common to replace it from 150,000 km onwards.

Can a plastic radiator be replaced with an all-aluminium one?

Not directly: dimensions and mountings are usually specific to the model. There are aftermarket aluminium radiators that dissipate heat better than the original, but you should confirm mechanical compatibility with the mountings and hoses before buying.

Does the system need bleeding after replacing a cooling part?

Yes, always. After replacing the radiator, pump, thermostat or hoses, the air must be bled from the circuit following the manufacturer's procedure. Poor bleeding leaves air pockets that reduce cooling and can damage the head gasket.
