FAQs about oil coolers

How do I know if the oil cooler has failed?

The key symptom is oil and coolant mixing: a milky emulsion (mayonnaise-like sludge) appears on the oil filler cap, the dipstick or in the expansion tank. If the oily film is in the expansion tank and is not caused by the head gasket, the oil cooler is the most likely culprit.

Is an oil cooler the same as an oil radiator?

They are similar but not identical. The oil cooler (heat exchanger) uses the cooling circuit to cool the oil. The oil radiator is an oil-to-air exchanger (with external fins), more common on performance vehicles. Both do the same job but in different ways.

What should be replaced along with the oil cooler?

All the oil cooler O-rings (single-use), the oil filter housing gasket and the engine oil. If the mixing has been severe, the coolant should also be changed several times and the thermostat and water pump checked (oil degrades rubber parts).

Does the cooling circuit need flushing after the replacement?

Yes, it is essential. If oil and coolant have mixed, the circuit should be flushed with a dedicated cleaner before fitting the new oil cooler. Otherwise the oil residue will keep damaging the rubber parts and the new cooler's performance will suffer.
