FAQs about EGR valves

How do I know if my EGR valve is stuck?

Typical symptoms are loss of power, limp mode, black smoke under acceleration, unstable idle, higher fuel consumption and the engine warning light with codes P0400-P0409. A diagnostic check shows the EGR opening percentage and the values read by the position sensor.

Can the EGR valve be cleaned instead of replaced?

If the symptoms are caused by carbon build-up, cleaning with a dedicated EGR cleaner followed by an adaptation with a diagnostic tool can solve the problem. If the electric motor, the position sensor or the valve body is damaged, it must be replaced.

Is it legal to delete the EGR?

No. Spanish regulations (Royal Decree 920/2017) prohibit disabling a vehicle's original emission control systems. Deleting the EGR can mean failing the ITV (the Spanish MOT) and administrative penalties. The legal and recommended option is to keep the system working properly.

Are EGR valves tested before dispatch?

Yes. Using diagnostic equipment we check the actuation, full travel and position sensor response. If any parameter is out of tolerance, the part is not sold. The gas passage is also cleaned before dispatch.
