The crankshaft is the part that converts the reciprocating motion of the pistons into rotary motion, and it is commonly replaced after an engine seizure, a broken con rod or a bearing failure.

Every crankshaft undergoes a visual and dimensional inspection before going into stock: we measure the crankpin and main journal diameters, check for cracks and regrind when necessary. We are an ATF and are members of the Alicante Consumer Arbitration System (no. 296956).

Before buying a crankshaft

We need the engine code (3 or 4 letters stamped on the block) and, if possible, the part number of the old crankshaft. Crankshafts are specific to each engine family: even two engines with the same displacement may use different crankshafts. If your engine has suffered a bearing failure, we recommend also replacing the main and big-end bearing shells, and checking the oil sump and oil pump.

Frequently asked questions about crankshafts

How do I know if I need to replace the crankshaft?

The typical symptoms are a metallic knocking from the bottom end of the engine, low oil pressure, metal fragments in the sump, a noise at idle that gets worse as the engine warms up, or a previous main or big-end bearing failure. An inspection with the engine opened up confirms the diagnosis.

What should be replaced along with the crankshaft?

We always recommend replacing the main and big-end bearing shells, the front and rear crankshaft oil seals and the sump gasket, and thoroughly cleaning the lubrication system. If the failure was caused by seizure, also check the pistons, con rods and oil pump.

Are used crankshafts reground?

We always check the dimensions before selling them. If the measurements are within tolerance, the crankshaft is sold as standard size (STD); if it needs regrinding, this is clearly stated in the description. Either way, it comes with its dimensional information.

What warranty does a used crankshaft from a car breaker's have?

A 1-year warranty is included. The warranty covers crankshaft failures during that period, provided it has been fitted by a professional garage and the bearing shells and seals have been replaced as recommended by the manufacturer.
