Frequently asked questions about fuel level senders

How do I know if my fuel level sender is broken?

The typical symptoms are a fuel gauge that does not move, gives erratic readings (rising and falling for no reason) or always shows empty or full. Before replacing the sender, it is worth ruling out faults in the instrument cluster or wiring with a diagnostic check.

Can I replace just the fuel level sender, or does the whole module need replacing?

It depends on the model. On vehicles built before 2005 the sender can be replaced as a separate part. On modern vehicles it usually comes integrated in the fuel pump module, and it is best to replace the complete assembly to avoid leaks and having to remove the tank again.

How much does a used fuel level sender from a car breaker's cost?

The price depends on the model: separate senders can cost €25-60 and complete modules with an integrated sender €60-150, with savings of up to 70% on the equivalent new part.

Does the fuel level sender need calibrating after fitting?

On most models no calibration is needed: the sender is plug-and-play. On some premium vehicles with digital instruments, an adaptation with diagnostic equipment may be required after fitting.
