Frequently asked questions about propshafts

When does the propshaft need replacing?

When vibration appears at certain speeds, metallic noises when changing gear or a sharp clunk when pulling away. These are typical symptoms of damaged universal joints or centre bearing.

Can the propshaft be repaired or does it have to be replaced completely?

In many cases the universal joints and centre bearing can be replaced, but if the CV joints or the tube itself are damaged, it is best to replace the complete balanced propshaft.

Does the propshaft come balanced?

Used propshafts are supplied exactly as removed from the original vehicle, factory-balanced. If it is dismantled or the universal joints are replaced, it should be rebalanced at a specialist workshop.

Is a propshaft from a different engine of the same model compatible?

Not always. The length, flanges and critical speed of the propshaft vary according to engine and gearbox. Always check the OEM part number before buying.
