FAQs about intake parts

How do I know if the intake manifold is cracked?

Typical symptoms: whistling or hissing while driving, unstable idle, loss of power and the engine warning light with code P0101 or P0171 (lean mixture). A smoke test on the intake system clearly shows where the crack is.

What are swirl flaps and why do they fail?

Swirl flaps are small flaps inside the intake manifold that regulate airflow according to engine speed to improve combustion at low revs. They fail when carbon build-up makes them stick, or when the spindle or the actuator motor breaks.

Should swirl flaps be deleted?

It is not recommended and may be illegal depending on the model. Deleting the swirl flaps causes a loss of low-end torque, higher fuel consumption and a possible ITV (Spanish MOT) failure. The right solution is to repair the manifold or replace it with a tested one.

Can a cracked plastic manifold be repaired?

Epoxy resin repairs tend not to last because of the engine's heat and vibration. For a lasting solution, the recommended option is to replace the manifold with a tested one under warranty.
